About Our Church

This page is designed to introduce you to our church.  We hope that what you see and read here will be what you experience when you become involved at Surgoinsville First United Methodist Church.

Communion With Christ

We believe that we were made for a relationship with God through Jesus Christ.  Jesus came so that “we might have life and might have it more abundantly (John 10:10)”.  He said, “Live in me.  Make your home in me just as I do in you (John 15:5).”  Jesus wants a saving relationship with us, one that is intimate and organic, not plastic and inauthentic.  We want to help you experience the reality of the living Christ in your life.

Celebration of God

Sunday mornings we come together to celebrate God’s presence in the world, in our lives, and to retell the story of God’s saving acts.  In spite of problems and difficulties in life, the church comes together for worship and support.  We seek to provide a variety of worship experiences through music (traditional and contemporary), dance, scripture, communion, drama, and silence. This is all to create an atmosphere to help you connect with God.

Care For One Another

We were not only created to have relationship with God but with each other.  Jesus calls us to love God with all our heart, mind, soul and strength.  In a day where loneliness is almost universal, the Bible’s description of the church as a loving, caring community is not only relevant but also desperately needed.

In addition to pastoral care, the primary way we care for each other is through our Sunday School classes.  These are not only places where we grow in our relationship with Christ but where we care for one another’s needs through prayer and practical service.  We have Sunday school classes for all ages as well as a nursery.  Our Midweek Bible Study led by our pastor is another avenue to help us root ourselves in God’s Word.

Committed to Ministry

We exist to make disciples of Jesus Christ.  In addition to our worship and Sunday School we have other opportunities to grow in our commitment to go into all the world including:  United Methodist Women and Men, Youth Group, Jim Luster Christmas Program, Vacation Bible School, Outreach Events, and giving to people and agencies committed to sharing God’s love to a hurting world.  We seek to enable each member to find the ministry God is calling them to, in and outside the church.

Children and Youth Ministry

Children and youth are important at our church.  We have a team of people who work with them so they can know the love of Christ.  These ministries include:

bullet

Sunday School classes led by teachers who love God and love kids and teens;

bulletYouth group which meets on Sunday nights for fellowship and fun;
bulletChildren’s church program during morning worship for kids ages 3-7 so they can worship in an age-appropriate way;
bulletAnnual Youth resurrection trip in January to Gatlinburg;
bullet

Musical Programs

Our History

We are a United Methodist Church.  John Wesley founded it as a renewal movement in England in the mid 1700’s.  They tried to reach out to un-reached people, offering worship that fit the culture, nurture and growth in small groups and practical acts of love and compassion.

Surgoinsville First United Methodist Church started in 1816.  We are bound together by our love for Jesus and a shared belief in the core truths of the Bible.  We seek our worship to fit our culture, nurture each other in small groups (Sunday School classes) and minister to people through practical acts of service.

One Final Word

We hope this has helped you learn about our church and its ministries.  If you have any questions or request additional information, please email us.  We hope your time with us has been a blessing and you will choose to join our growing family.
